Coinciding with the 48th anniversary commemoration of Martial Law in the Philippines, the aim for BAYAN KO is to educate the new generation, especially Pilipinos in the global diaspora, about the impact and continued implications of the US-sanctioned Marcos dictatorship and on the state of human rights abuse in the Philippines. Our end goal is not only to broaden the audience's social conscience but to incite them to action in hopes they can mobilize others to support the cause, if only to speak up and educate others.

Ninotchka Rosca
Ninotchka Rosca is a Philippine-born writer who was imprisoned by the Marcos Dictatorship with no charges filed. She went into exile five years into the martial law era when threatened with a second arrest and/or trial before a military tribunal. She currently lives in New York City. She has published seven books, the latest being a definitive collection of her short stories called "Stories of a Bitter Country." Her novel of the martial law years, "State of War," is considered a classic of Philippine Literature. She has received numerous awards for her writing, including The American Book Award for the novel "Twice Blessed". She has founded two activist women's organizations in the USA and currently works with AF3IRM.

Ryan Gajudo Macasero
Ryan covers Cebu and the Visayas for Rappler.
He is particularly interested in people stories, development issues, and local policy making.
He previously worked for Rappler from 2013 to 2016 as a social media producer, editor for the #BalikBayan section, and correspondent in Cebu, before returning in 2019.
He graduated from California State University, East Bay, with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Political Science.
Outside of work, Ryan loves exploring the local music scenes of Cebu and Manila. He also performs spoken word poetry throughout the country.

Dr. Joi Barrios-Leblanc
Dr. Maria Josephine Barrios, popularly known as Joi Barrios, is a poet, activist, scriptwriter, actress, translator and teacher. Born in 1962, she completed her Ph.D. in Philippine Literature at the University of the Philippines (UP). She taught at the University and also served as an Associate for Fiction at the UP Likhaan: Creative Writing Center. She has won various honors and awards, including the Palanca Award, the most prestigious literary award in the Philippines. During the Marcos dictatorship and the tumultuous years that followed, she became well-known as a freedom activist and rally poet. She has taught at UC Berkeley and UC Irvine. Her books include Ang Pagiging Babae ay Pamumuhay sa Panahon ng Digma (1990); Bailaya: Mga Dula Para sa Kababaihan (1997); Minatamis at iba pang Tula ng Pag-ibig (1998); and Prince Charming at iba pang Nobelang Romantiko (2001).

Leezel Tanglao is a New York-based bridge journalist at the intersection of editorial, product, business development and sales. She currently leads membership and innovation at HuffPost. She consults with companies through her company, StatFury. Leezel's other previous stints include: Associated Press, CNN, CBSNews.com, VICE News, NowThis, ABCNews.com, KCBS/KCAL and Press-Enterprise. She is a 2019 Filipino Young Leaders Program delegate and currently sits on the FYLPRO Board of Directors and is the Chair of the FYLPRO COVID19 task force. If you’re wondering how to say her name, it’s pronounced LEE-ZEL (not Liesel from the “Sound of Music”).
